With its beautiful beaches, friendly locals and laid back vibe, Fiji has long been a favourite for family holidays but not everyone arrives with a bucket and spade. Couples have discovered this beautiful tropical destination also offers the ultimate kid-free escape. However, this review of Likuliku Lagoon Resort may surprise you. It is widely regarded as one of the most romantic accommodation options in Fiji but you don’t need to visit with a partner to appreciate being kid free in Fiji. This adults-only resort prides itself on catering equally well to singles as it does to those in search of romance. To be honest, I wasn’t sure they could pull this off before I arrived. How is a solo traveller supposed to deal with the likes of this romantic table for two?
Just the thought of being surrounded by canoodling couples gazing into each other’s eyes while my own beloved was back in Australia made me apprehensive. No one was more surprised than I was when staying at this resort by myself turned out to be a trip highlight. Things like this table for two didn’t end up bothering me one bit. Here are 10 reasons why you should consider staying at one of Fiji’s most romantic resorts. Either with – or without – a partner.
Easy access
The Mamanuca group of islands where Likuliku is located can be reached in an hour by boat whereas getting to the outlying Yasawas takes around 5 hours. Likuliku is serviced three times daily by South Sea Cruises’ fast catamaran from Denarau. If money is no object, you can also get there via helicopter, speedboat or seaplane.
The ever-changing views
Likuliku is one of the few resorts that actually looks better than the shots on the website. Whether you are going for a stroll along the beach or having breakfast in the restaurant, there is no shortage of things to look at. It is almost impossible to take a bad photo at this resort.
Snorkelling and swimming at Likuliku
The surrounding waters are recognised as a marine sanctuary, something that is evidenced by the large number of colourful fish that call the lagoon home. Snorkelling adventures can be had from the end of the Likuliku jetty (keep an eye out for arriving and departing boats) or you can venture further afield on a day trip. There is also a spectacular horizon-edge swimming pool surrounded by loungers. These are the perfect spot to catch up on some holiday reading.
Bespoke day trips
Tours cater for a handful of guests rather than a boatload of holiday makers. Don’t miss doing a trip to Modriki Island where the movie Castaway was filmed. I can’t guarantee you will see Tom Hanks but the scenery and snorkelling is breathtaking.
Deluxe beachfront bures
Likuliku has the only overwater bungalows in Fiji but I preferred the (cheaper) deluxe beachfront rooms. These have an outdoor bure, private plunge pool and a stunning view of the beach. You might like to bring a pair of reef shoes as the island’s beaches are coral rather than sand and can be a bit tough on the tootsies.
Pure Fiji products
Each bure includes a male and female gift pack filled with divine-smelling Pure Fiji products that are replaced every day. Most people stock up on Pure Fiji goodies at the airport before flying home but you will already have some to take with you.
No kids at Likuliku
Malolo Island Resort, the family friendly sister property, is located a short boat ride away on another part of the island but you won’t find any kids at Likuliku. Whether you’ve got children or not, sometimes it’s nice to escape the pitter patter of little feet for a few days.
Being alone but not lonely
Rather than feeling lonely at Likuliku, spending a few days alone with no one to please but myself turned out to be the ultimate indulgence. Much to my surprise, I discovered that Likuliku attracts quite a few solo travellers who revel in the beautiful surroundings, fine food and warmth of the Fijians. When the staff stopped to say hello and enquire about my day or offer a suggestion for something that I might enjoy doing, it made me feel as if I was staying with friends.
Tulia, the front office manager, offered to join me for dinner both nights. She explained the staff keep a special eye on solo travellers and often volunteer to keep them company for meals (or not – the need for solitude is also encouraged and respected). One of the joys of travel is connecting with other people at your destination. I enjoyed chatting with the other guests and getting to know the staff as everyone has a story to tell. I felt privileged that some of them chose to share their stories with me.
Dining at Likuliku
Dishes are light and delicious with a focus on tropical flavours. I especially enjoyed the lunches which began with an amuse bouche and a chilled tropical drink served in a shot glass. Meals are included in the tariff but despite eating a 2 course lunch and 3 courses for dinner, I never felt uncomfortably full. Service can be a little slow at times but with such a beautiful view to soak up it doesn’t really matter (unless you are hungry!).
Sunset drinks
Head to the Masima Island Bar at the end of the jetty to catch the sunset. There are lounge chairs arranged for convivial conversation plus a selection of secluded tables for two overlooking the lagoon. Likuliku isn’t cheap but if money is tight, you can always stay for just one night. Unlike some resorts, there is no minimum booking requirement. Try to arrive early and leave late, whether you’re staying for one night or ten. Believe me, you won’t want to leave.
